The hippo is one of Africa’s most feared animals.

I’m too keyed up to sleep at first. Lying in bed, beside the thin canvas wall of my tent, around midnight I hear heavy breathing—loud enough to be heard over the pounding rain. It’s right next to my head. A large animal is nearby. Somehow the sound of its breathing is comforting, reminding me of the much softer breath of my husband and border collie who would be sleeping next to me in my bed at home. Finally, I drift off to sleep.

When I wake in the morning, I notice my tent is markedly askew. lt lists to the right, the corner nearest my bed collapsing. At breakfast, the askaris tell me who was there beside me last night: a mother hippo and her baby.
